Pie – Magpie like

 

Pie – A baked dish of fruit, meat or vegetables, enclosed in pastry.

A recent trend to call a dish with only a top made out of pastry, covering food within a serving dish, has been seen amongst gastropubs in the UK but, as @pieswithsides and others have pointed out, this does not fit within the definition of a pie.

The word ‘pie’ has its roots in the medieval Latin word ‘pia’ which meant the same thing (sides and all). ’Pia’ came from the early Latin ‘pica’ – which was the Romans’ name for what we now call a magpie; the idea being that the collection of a variety of parts to create the filling was analogous with the magpie’s trait of collecting an assortment of objects with which to build a nest.
