Ecology – The study of this house

Ecology; meaning the science of the relationship of living things and the environment.

The word joined the English language in the early 19th century and is a variant of the german word ‘Oecologie’; first coined by German zoologist Ernst Haecke in 1866. The word joins two Greek words ‘oikos’ meaning ‘house’ and ‘ologie’ meaning ‘the study of’. The word ‘house’ here being used more in the context of ‘home’ – it is the study of how something fits into its home.
