Virgin – ‘Unmarried woman’

Virgin: Someone who has never had sex.

The word virgin has changed quite a lot over time, it got its current meaning in the 1300s but during the 1200s was used to mean ‘someone devoted to the church’. It came to English from French during the anglo-french period, the French word being ‘virgine’. It originated in the Latin (around 400CE) word ‘virgo’ (as in the star sign) which meant ‘unmarried woman’.
