Eponymous – ‘Having to do with things named after people’

Eponymous – A thing named after a person or group.

Eponymous is a messy hybrid of a word, let’s break it down. Starting at the beginning, with the Greeks, who used the word ‘eponym’ to mean ‘giving one’s name to something’, of course, the ancient Greeks loved this, especially when it came to their myths and religion, so it’s no surprise that they had to create a word for it. They combined two other words ‘epi’, meaning ‘upon’ and ‘nym’, meaning ‘name’.

When the word reached the Romans, they felt the need to add a little bit, they added their common word ending ‘osus’ which meant ‘having to do with’, which, in French, became ‘-ous’.
