Babe – Infant babble

Babe – An attractive person.

It’s a weird thing to compare a person to an infant as a way recognise that they are attractive isn’t it? The word ‘babe’ or  ‘baby’ is  usually used affectionately or to mean that the speaker finds the subject attractive.
The word ‘babe’ was first used only to refer to women, and actually dates back to 1915, ‘babe’ in this context, was started by students at the colleges of the USA and was a shortening of ‘baby’ which had been used to mean ‘attractive young woman’ since as early as the 1520s. In fact, only about 100 years earlier did it start to be used to mean ‘an infant’ and was an imitation of a common sound made by infants.
