Bear – The brown one

Bear – Large carnivorous mammal

The word ‘Bear’ comes from the old English ‘bera’, similarly used to describe the same animals, this, in turn came from the Proto-Germanic word ‘beron’ meaning ‘the brown one’. The start of ‘beron’ came from the Proto-Indo-European word ‘bher’ meaning brown.
