Forest – a large area of trees.

 

The word ‘forest’ joined English in the late 1200s and was used to describe an area of woodland allocated as royal hunting ground, during the period that the England was under French rule and the french brought many of their words into English, including this one. The french word ‘forest’ (you have to say it with an accent) is a derivative of the proto-Germanic word ‘furho’ meaning ‘pine’.
