Tomato – Astec for ‘swollen fruit’

Tomato: A glossy red, or occasionally yellow, pulpy edible fruit.

‘Tomato’ has been with us in it’s current form since the mid 1700s, before that we used the word ‘tomate’ which we got from the Spanish, the Spanish word ‘tomate’ was a derivative of the Aztec word for the fruit ‘tomatl’ which meant ‘the swollen fruit’. The switch to ‘tomato’ was in imitation of ‘potato’.
