Princess – Prime

Princess: Femaile member of the royal family, other than the monarch.

‘Princess’ joined the English language in the late 1300s and came over with the French, as did a lot of words relating to politics and the ruling classes – the French word was ‘princesse’. The word can be traced back to the Latin ‘principis’ and to the arlier Latin ‘primus’ which also led to ‘prime’.
