Sport – To be carried away

Sport – Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively.

‘Sport’ is a word that hasvbeen used in English since the 1500s and is a shortening of ‘disport’ which was in use from the 1300s to refer to the same thing. The word ‘disport’ came over from French and was a corruption of their word ‘deport’, originally Latin, this word combined ‘des’, meaning away, and ‘porter’ meaning ‘to carry’ so the word literally meant ‘to be carried away’
