Earth – From the Proto Indo-European word ‘er’

Earth – The planet on which we live.

The word ‘Earth’ has been around as ‘Earth’ for a very long time, but only became the name for the planet we live on in the early 1400s, before that, it was used solely as synomynous with ‘soil’. The word comes from a Proto-Germanic word; ‘Ertho’ and its original root is in the Proto-Indo-European word ‘Er’ which also meant ‘soil’.
