Post – Letters sent through a delivery system.
We are used to letters arriving at the door but why is it called post?
It dates back to the 1500s when horses were used to deliver letters between ‘posts’ in this case a place to be when on duty. Posts were established along a route so that the horses could travel between two posts and then the rider could swap to fresh horses whilst the others rested; this would ensure fast delivery. Post in this sense comes from the Latin ‘positum’ meaning ‘to put’.
