Colon, it’s rare that a word might be used interchangeably to relate to punctuation and intestines, they don’t seem too related, so what’s going on here?
Colon, as in the punctuation mark, dates back to Latin, before this, we have references from 1540 where it was used to mean part of a poem, it came from the Greek word ‘kolon’ which meant the same thing.
Colon, as in the intestine, also comes from the Greek ‘kolon’, not only was it used to mean part of a poem, it was also used to mean part of the body, how it came to only relate the intestine is unclear, but the Greeks used it to mean part or section.
