Apocalypse: Greek apokalyptein “uncover, disclose, reveal”.
With the news of the day we thought an appropriate word would be ‘Apocalypse’. But the good news is, we don’t need to worry about an apocalypse. Sadly not because the end of the world is not nigh , but because that’s not actually what apocalypse means in its true sense.
The word is made of a combination of two Greek words; ‘Apo’ is a suffix like anti or non which means its the opposite of the rest of the word. The rest comes from ‘Kalyptein’ which was Greek for ‘cover’, so the word literally means ‘Uncover’ and in the past was synonymous with ‘revelation’ or ‘enlighten’. And there’s no need to fear that is there?
Afraid we can’t offer any better news about the possibility of the end of the world though, sorry!
