Off-licence: Freedom to sell alcohol to be consumed off the premises, Read more:

I said I would look into this one for my wife, we couldn’t work out why it was ‘off’ when it seemed like the property must have had a licence. The reason behind this is actually quite simple; up until 2009 a property would receive either an ‘on-licence’ to sell alchol to be consumed on site or an ‘off-licence’ for alcohol which must be consumed off site.

Interestingly, until the 1990’s being an off-licence was a way for shops to use a loophole in the law to stay open outside of normally allowed hours, the hours for off-licences being similar to pubs.

The word ‘licence’ has its origins in the Latin word ‘licentia’ meaning ‘freedom’.
